Thai Pongal, Shankaranthi, was held on a Sunday morning with the exact time of Pongal at 10:17am. A large brass Kalasam was placed on top of a kolam in front of the decorative Sri Chakra at the temple entrance. With Aiya out of town Balananda (Shankar) commenced Suryanarayana puja as the pot was placed on the burner. Everyone placed a handful of uncooked rice grains into the pot after the milk had boiled over, auspiciously to the Northeast direction at first. This South Indian and Sri Lankan festival is in celebration of and praise to Lord Surya to bless the land with grains and abundance.
